What Makes a Wild Buffalo So Dangerous an Animal?

They kill more people than any other animal in Africa. They can weight up to 1,000 kgs. Their horns are a welded bone shield—and actually called a “boss.” They’re a walking mass of sheer aggression and pure unpredictability. Approaching them without caution means you’re in for a mauling—but bringing them down means you get to show off a prized “Big Five” trophy from the heart of Africa.

Nope, we aren’t talking about a saltwater croc or a lion or any other carnivore that is usually perceived as “dangerous.”

This time, it’s the cape—or wild, or black—buffalo. And it’s easily one of the deadliest animals in the world.

What Makes the Cape Buffalo so Different From Regular Bovines?

The African wild buffalo is also often called the “black death”—and the name is well deserved. When these ebony bovines combine the strength from their powerful muscles, menacing horns, and sheer size—even lions cannot stand up to them.

The wild buffalo is only very remotely related to the regular cows you might have seen at dairy farms. The closest domesticated bovine humans know of is the Asian water buffalo, which is also found in some African countries. The bison is also a close relative, although not exactly the same thing. However, unlike its Asian cousins, no human has ever domesticated the African wild buffalo—but we’ve always hunted them.

In fact, famous American writer Ernest Hemingway, in 1933, embarked on a 10-week safari to East Africa—and famously posed with a cape buffalo he had brought down.

Cape Buffaloes: Why They’re Dangerous

They aren’t just cows with big helmets. They might look sedentary and complacent—but don’t fall for their dark deception. You might think that the cute little oxpeckers that lounge leisurely on the buffalo’s back and ears are cute—but that is, once again, a delusion.

There’s a reason this bovine is among Africa’s five most prized and sought-after trophies.

It’s fearless—and if it’s injured, it’s angrier than the Hulk. Francis Parkman, author of The Oregon Trail, once wrote a detailed account of a buffalo hunt on the prairie: one has to be cool, collected, and absolutely calm. You need the “utmost skill” (and be skilled with the rifle), and be master of good judgment.

Part of what makes this caped crusader so dangerous is its unpredictability. There’s simply no telling what a buffalo might do next. You never know when they turn on you. When they’re triggered, they’ll charge at 50 km/h—eyes locked on target, horns aimed for maximum damage. And if you see them dip their heads during this charge—you shoot. There’s no point in trying to outrun an enraged buffalo unless your team calls itself the Suicide Squad.

Want to See One Up Close?

Take a premier safari through South Africa or Botswana to all the waterholes wherein you can find one of Africa’s most dangerous animals: the cape buffalo, also known as the Black Death. Think Ben Affleck as the caped crusader in animal-form with the temper of The Hulk, and you’ll have a good idea of what you’re in for. Luckily for you, watching and hunting are both an option.

In business since 1998, Ikamela Safari has 6 private owned parks and reserves in said regions, and provides you ample opportunity to spot wild buffaloes as well as other African glories that fall under the “Big 5.” If you ask us, we’d say peak visiting season runs from late December to Early Feb. Give us a call now to book your safaris!
